I just got permission from Lynn to post this, so here it is!

In 1859 I would be one of the Chinese immigrants settled in the Malaccan straits. Dad would be in his element playing the middleman between local merchants and British colonials, while I'd help my mum supplement the family income by weaving mengkuang mats (and to her great exasperation, I still would not sit like a girl). It is a time full of change as new cultures and governments intermingle, and I would feel the barest inkling of some sort of pull that, not too long later, I imagine would draw me away from home and out into the world.

2010 is already awesome...

Or is it awful?

Most people did a writing/art combo, so the lines of the contest were blurred a little bit. Regardless, my favorite entries were these:

[info]krishnaa's entry about living in India, here;
[info]meeleena's awesome drawing that she should expand into a comic, because I'd read it, here;
[info]ducttapesnakes's written/drawn entry about being biracial in 1859, here;
• and Lynn Lau's written/drawn entry about Chinese immigrants living in the Malaccan straits, which I'm waiting on permission to post here.

You four are getting books, so please send me your addresses when you get a chance!

Everyone else, thank you so much for entering! All of your entries were wonderful, and I had a tough time narrowing it down to four. I wish I could give you all books. ♥

Hey dudes, hourlies! They are going to be late as hell until I catch up because the first few days of this month have not been conducive to drawing comics at all.

ryland ianelli

Ryland Ianelli has been featured here before, as part of the Mr. Yoder & Mr. Ryland vaudeville team. Check out his work at http://czartooncomics.com

Here is a cross-post then.  This is one of the sketches I've done of my classmates at the Center for Cartoon Studies.  As Joey Weiser mentioned and I forgot you could also follow my postings here: http://syndicated.livejournal.com/yoderart/

I don't know that I'll always remember to cross-post, but I can try.

Are you all familiar with this blog? http://niccageaseveryone.blogspot.com/ not always successful but when it is, oh boy!

So, I have been posting Monday, Wednesday, Friday on my blog and debating if I should be crossposting to this account.  Any opinions?
This is the kind of stuff your missing if you're not checking out my blog

I'm an interview junkie

Here is a great interview with David Simon, creator of The Wire. I finally got around to watching the whole series a couple weeks ago. What they accomplished is pretty totally amazing, but Deadwood is still my favorite for what I suppose are largely personal reasons.

Be warned that the interview does contain spoilers.

 I was talking to my friend Max last night for a couple hours and was reminded that I haven't checked out his art blog in awhile.  I just remedied the situation and jesus fuck has he gotten good.  He seems to have made that leap some cartoonists make from the merely excellent to the amazing.  Really great stuff.  You should check it out

The world needs a book of this stuff to exist inside of it.

 Is it possible that Synecdoche New York is the best American movie of the decade?  Much as I love There Will Be Blood?

It's not a particularly pleasant viewing experience, one might even call it a certain kind of harrowing, but Kaufman's obsessions with time, identity, and decay throw up the image of a man who in some ways is the mirror image of an America that's breaking down.  That probably isn't something that Kaufman had in mind but it does seem like the metaphor of the Hoffman character however personal and specific is in some ways universal to human experience and consciousness. The themes are so big and unwieldy that the movie is big and unwieldy but I for one love the big and unwieldy, beautiful uneven messes.

Anyway, I don't even know if I'll ever see the thing again, it's fucking dark, and also particularly depressing for artists, but I think it might be, at the very least, the most artistically underrated movie in quite some time.  Yeah it's a big mess but it hits on something original and profound

Whatever, just throwing it out there.

I will post some drawings again someday I promise.

Kate and I are having a joint show - just the two of us! - at GR2. It opens January 16th. If you're in the area, it would be rad to see you there!
